This was exactly my brain in mgmt in tech. I moved to an IC role which really hurt my ego badly. Then I just quit. I wonder if I could have changed my mindset or if I was being too fragile. But I quit and I finally let my brain have a break. For once in my life! Yay!
I was in tech too! That switch to IC can be such a good one, but I deeply get the confidence and ego hit. Isn’t it so crazy to watch your brain come back online and look at the difference?
I so resonate with this as I quit my corporate job due to burnout and didn't realize it until I was drowning in burnout. By then, my only option was to quit or continue on the same road which would have made things worse.
Good for you for pulling up stakes and making a 180 change in your life! Portugal and Paris are on my bucket list!
I look forward to reading the rest of your articles as I just discovered your Substack today because of another Substacker who recommended you on Notes!
Thank you Lotus Empress! I'm sorry you also went through burnout bad enough to make significant changes to your life. Drowning is unfortunately a really valid way to describe it. I hope you're starting to recover and navigate what's next for you.
Hi Cheyanne! Thank you! Yes, I too, have made a 180 change in my life internally and externally. As a result, I am feeling much better about life. Sounds like you are too which is awesome! Here's to all of us being kind to ourselves as we navigate burnout and celebrating that we're alive to experience the ebb and flow of life!
Burnout sounds horrible. Your schedule sounded daunting. I'm glad you chose a different kind of life. The mentality is very different here. I've met so many people with one or two degrees who do jobs completely unrelated. Like having a master degree in the sciences but working as a nanny because that's what actually suits their personality and mom/family commitments. It's quite refreshing.
Exactly why we moved! It’s so different here. The mentality in the most obvious and subtle ways is different. I had friends ask why we were moving to Europe and not somewhere in the States with a lower cost of living and it’s because the mentality there is all about the grind and productivity. Though I think there’s growing conversation that it’s not the way to live.

Isn't it amazing how influenced we are by the status quo even when it makes us miserable? Thankfully, we discovered another way!
